This Friday we will get treated to a second full moon this month, but it will probably not be blue.

According to Fox CT, every month has a full moon, but about every three years there will be two in one month. The reason is that the lunar cycle and the calendar year don't match up perfectly, so that leaves us with two full moons in one month every few years.

The reason it probably won't be blue is that in order for it to take on a bluish color is from smoke or dust particles in the atmosphere. That's the most common reason, but there have been other natural occurrences in history that have made the full moon look blue.

Fox CT sites a volcanic eruption in Indonesia that happened in 1883.  It was so massive (scientists likened it to a 100-megaton nuclear bomb) that the moon took on a deep blue color for years after the explosion.

Are you going to check out the moon this Friday? Your next chance to see two full moons in one month will be in January 2018.
