You didn't have to like the Yankees or Baseball to like Yogi Berra. He was more then just a player, he was a character.

Yogi Berra was one of baseball’s greatest catchers, who during his playing days was a mainstay of 10 Yankee championship teams and as a manager led both the Yankees and Met's to the World Series — but to many he maybe better known as a lovable cultural figure, even inspiring a cartoon character. Berra died on Tuesday at the age of 90.

On the field he triumphed again and again which was definitely a source of his popularity, but his legacy might be even better remembered for what he contributed to American language, famous pronouncements so nonsensical they became know as "Yogi-ism's".

Here's a few of his best:

  • You can observe a lot just by watching.
  • When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
  • Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.
  • Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.
  • You can observe a lot by just watching.
  • It’s like déjà vu all over again.
  • Slump? I ain’t in no slump… I just ain’t hitting.
  • It gets late early out here.
  • We have deep depth.

No one’s really certain whether Yogi came up with all of those on his own, not even Yogi himself. As he put it, “I never said most of the things I said.”

Here's a short bio on the life and career of Yogi Berra:
