With the KICKS 105.5 Career Fair happening tomorrow at the Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury and since it's also "Throwback Thursday," I thought about my first few jobs, before radio.

I had a number of jobs before actually getting into radio. Most were necessary to work my way through college and to be able to afford things like a car, insurance and food.

So, let's start way back when on Long Island ... before I was "Mr. Morning."

I was still in high school when I got my very first paying job. That was in the Waldbaums produce department in Garden City Park. There I got to bag lettuce; keep the fruit and veggies nice and neat; wear the green smock; and learn to tell people ... "can't elope alone, take one home"... (a very cheesy cantaloupe reference).

And if they we're looking for turnips: "Look around their bound to Turn up"... (lol)

I was making a whopping $2.30 an hour, but you gotta start somewhere.

After that I moved up and on. Next it was a janitor at a BOCES where I was up to $250 a week ...wow. Then I hit pay dirt as a Meter Reader for The Long Island Lighting Company making $325.00 a week. I was young, stupid and in the money. Life was good for a kid with an "outside" summer job and money in his pocket.

After college I started my radio career which began with stints at WGSM, WCTO, WGLI, WALK, and WKJY. I moved with my wife Mary to Connecticut in 1989 and as they say, the rest is history.

Don't ever give up on your dream. Maybe your journey will start this week at the Danbury Career Fair on Friday, March 6 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury.
