Not that you were particularly worried or anything, but Marvel’s recent test screenings for Captain America: Civil War have yielded the most positive audience reactions since The Winter Soldier. Previously, the second Captain America film had received the highest marks at test screenings, which sounds about right considering that it’s the best MCU film to date. Could Civil War be even better?

Devin at Birth.Movies.Death reports that he’s heard from several sources that Captain America: Civil War is testing really, really well with audiences in early screenings. Test screenings are typical, as are reshoots, which is what directors Joe and Anthony Russo and the cast of Civil War are doing right now — audience feedback can help them during this process, where they could lengthen or shorten sequences, or add a couple of beats to help clarify or enhance specific characters or scenes.

But if Devin’s reporting is accurate (and his sources are legit, so it is), Marvel probably won’t be changing anything major in their reshoots. BMD also notes that the only thing these sources can’t seem to agree on is “whether the movie tested as well as or better than Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” That film was previously the most well-received at test screenings, so at the very least, we know that Civil War is as good as The Winter Soldier, if not slightly better — your mileage may vary.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this report is that audiences appeared to love Civil War despite the fact that it goes to some “dark places” and “doesn’t pull any punches,” and it’s those darker elements that had Marvel executives concerned about how the film would play as the Phase 3 debut. “Dark places” likely refers to some major character deaths, a few of which have been rumored since earlier last year.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
