Danbury Man Killed in Police-Involved Shooting Has Been Identified

A local man has been identified as the person who has deceased as the result of the recent police-involved shooting in Danbury, CT.

According to a press release from the Connecticut State Police, 45-year-old Paul Arbitelle of Danbury was killed during an altercation with police this past Saturday (Dec. 29). His last known address was at 124 Coal Pit Road.

As previously reported, officers arrived at the Housing Authority-managed Glen Apartment complex on Memorial Drive at round 9:15 PM after a call that a possibly intoxicated, unwanted person was on the premises, causing a disturbance.

Police say the Arbitelle, who was reportedly not supposed to be on the property, brandished a large knife, charged at an officer and at that point, an officer attempted to use his taser, but that did not stop him. Then, a second officer fired his duty pistol, shooting the knife-wielding Arbitelle at least once. During the confrontation, a female tenant, who is also a relative of Paul Arbitelle, also suffered a gunshot wound, as she was in close range of the shooting. Both people were rushed to Danbury Hospital, where Arbitelle was pronounced dead and as of the latest report, the woman remains in stable condition.

The Major Crime unit of the Connecticut State Police was assigned to the investigation of the shootings, and according to the Danbury PD, the initial information indicates that the officer in question was in life-threatening danger and acted in self-defense. No other officers were injured during the incident. Next, an additional assessment and internal review of the shooting will be conducted.

The Danbury Police Department says that "this is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to all those affected."
