Yet another plot has surfaced in an attempt to scam you and your neighbors out of your hard-earned dollars.

In a news release, the Danbury Police Department would like the public to know that there has been an increasing amount of complaints that scammers have been trying to get one over on Danbury residents under the guise of New England's largest energy delviery company, Eversource Electric.

Apparently, many people -- mostly business owners -- are receiving phone calls from a so-called "representative" of Eversource, claiming that the business' power will be cut off immediately if a payment is not made. From there, the victim is said to be instructed to purchase gift cards such as those from Green Dot or iTunes, and then give the caller the pin numbers from those gift cards.

If you or anyone you know have received a call like this, please contact the Danbury PD at 203-797-4611.

The Danbury Police Department and Eversource Energy would like to remind you of the following:

  • Eversource representatives NEVER ask for instant payment in person or over the phone.
  • Eversource representatives DO NOT require the use of pre-paid debit or gift cards.
  • Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment will receive written notice via the U.S. mail service, which includes the actions they can take to maintain service.
  • If you want to verify any unsolicited contact via Eversource, please contact them at 1-800-286-2000
