Danbury HS Shocked By Loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield in State Tournament
It wasn't suppose to happen this way for the Danbury Hatters Boys Basketball team.
After completing a 17-3 season, winning the FCIAC Title a week ago, and winning their first State Tournament game, they weren't prepared for what went down Monday night.
The Hatters met the Notre Dame Lancers in the quarterfinal round of the CIAC State Basketball Tournament. The Hatters had just come off an impressive win over Trinity Catholic on Saturday, and were set to continue their quest towards a state championship The next opponent to stand in their way was the Notre Dame Lancers, who had a perfect 20-0 season.
The Hatters played extremely well through three quarters of basketball, and took a 21 point lead into the final quarter. There was just 8 minutes of basketball left and the Hatters would advance to the semi-finals of the CIAC State Tournament, and put an end to the Lancers perfect season.
But Notre Dame had another type of finish in mind, and they came out fighting. In just half a quarter they cut the 21 point deficit down to single digits, a few minutes later the Hatters lead was cut to 3, and with a little over a minute to play the score was tied.
Notre Dame managed to score 37 points in the fourth quarter, and went on to add 14 more points in the overtime. When the smoke cleared and the game had ended, the Hatters were on the short end of a 76-70 defeat, a loss that knocked Danbury out of the Tournament and ended their season on a disappointing note.
Danbury Hatters head Basketball Coach Casey Bock summed up his teams shocking defeat in a quote from newstimes.com:
This is going to stick with us for a while, but hopefully, once this settles down, the kids will be back to put a banner (FCIAC championship) up that hasn’t been put up in 26 years.
