Newtown is quickly becoming the place to go for fine dining. My husband and I finally got to try a new restaurant that we have been hearing such good things about for a little while now.

We've been to the Dere Street Bakery a bunch of times, but we had yet to visit the restaurant. The British and Italian restaurant is located right on Main Street in Newtown, across from the flag pole. The building was redesigned before they opened, and I love the new look.

We parked down by the bakery and walked up to the restaurant. They have parking in front of the building, but there is also plenty of parking along Main Street. When we reached the main entrance, we were greeted by a hostess who opened the door for us. She gave us the option of sitting outside or on their covered patio, and we decided on the patio.

Not long after sitting down, Ashley came over with bread for the table and to take our drink orders. They have a very nice selection of wine, beer, and specialty cocktails. My husband chose a gin and tonic and I ordered a Riesling.

For the appetizers, we shared the Welsh rarebit, which is a thick piece of toast with a smooth and creamy cheese spread over the top. It also came with a nice piece of bacon that we split. My husband tried the soup of the day, which was Gazpacho, and I tried the soup special, which was a seafood chowder. Both were delicious.

For the entrees my husband ordered the fish and chips, which he was very pleased with. The fish was huge! Plus, it wasn't greasy, which is always nice. I ordered the hand-pressed beef burger with Stilton cheese, and I, too, was very pleased. The burger was super think and juicy, and the cheese was delicious. Both of our meals came with their fries, and my husband's meal had crushed peas as well, which he said were fresh and very good.

For dessert, we split the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I've never had this before, but have heard people rave this famous English dessert. It was a good choice, because we both really enjoyed it. It was sweet and I loved the caramel that was drizzled over and around it in the dish.

My husband decided to have some tea with dessert. Ashley brought out a box for him to choose from, and they have a good selection of tea. Once he made his choice, a little teapot, cream, and sugar cubes were brought out. It's a nice way to end the meal.

Not only was the food good, but the staff was awesome. Ashley was very attentive, answered any questions we had, and was super friendly. We also had the pleasure of meeting one of the managers, John Torres. He was also very friendly and you can tell he loves what he does. He was going from table to table, chatting with all the patrons.

It's a very comfortable and friendly environment. Sophisticated, but you won't feel out of place wearing jeans with a nice top. The prices are reasonable and the portions are good.

Plus, if you sit on the patio, you get the added fun of watching people try to navigate around the flag pole in the middle of Main Street. That's always a good time.
