If you're a baby-boomer like myself there was no such thing as seat-belts let alone classes to install car seats back in the day.

From the New Milford Spectrum comes a story about the Fairfield Police Department hosting a car seat installation clinic this Saturday, December 3 at 100 Reef Road by appointment only. Back in the 50's when I was a little kid, we didn't even have seat belts and kid's car seats weren't even thought about yet. When my dad was driving, there was always a cigarette hangin' out of his mouth and when he took a sharp turn, my two brothers and I propelled from side to side on the rear vinyl seat slamming into one another. There were no concussions or severe injuries to speak of and we lived to tell about it. Here's Comedian Joey Kola to paint that picture.

Nowadays adults are required to attend Car Seat Installation University. OK, maybe I exaggerate a little. Mindy and I had to drop $200 bucks on an approved car seat and then she had to drive up to the New Fairfield Police Department where she had made an appointment with a Police Carseat Installation Expert or PCIE for short. If you're a new parent, and getting ready to purchase your first car seat, make absolutely sure it meets the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. For suggestions on approved car seats, go to healthychildren.org. For a list of fitting stations, click on ctsafekids.org.

Mindy and I thought, "How difficult could it possibly be to seat belt a kids car seat in a normal car?" I'm warning you, DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF! Let the trained professionals install it for you. If you choose not to take my advice, there may be a litany of profanity and a possible dent on the backseat door. Good luck!
