There are some old buildings in Newtown CT, but up in the Castle Hill area is where you will find acres with a mansion built in 1908.  Unfortunately, the old mansion was destroyed by a fire over night.

According to WFSB, the fire at 44 Castle Hill Rd. was called in as a brush fire, but when the fire department arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames. They were able to get the fire under control after about two hours. Thankfully, no one was hurt because the house has been empty for many years.

The News Times reports that neighbors and land trust officials believe that those who vandalized a bench and a sign across the street from the mansion may be connected to the fire. Since the building had been empty for many years, it was not structurally sound and that made it difficult for firefighters to get to certain areas of the burning building.

I've never seen this mansion in person, but growing up in Newtown I heard about it and have seen pictures. It was a really nice building and I'm sad that it has been destroyed. I would have loved to see the mansion get restored.

Authorities are not sure what started the fire, but it is under investigation.
