Trisha Yearwood has long been a trailblazer, but interestingly, she doesn't think of herself as a songwriter.

"Garth hates when I say this," she admits in a chat with Taste of Country, but, "I don't feel like it comes naturally to me. I feel like for him it does — it's like breathing — but for me, it's work. I tend to not do things that I have to work at."

Still, Yearwood found herself falling into the songwriting process organically when working alongside her husband on "For the Last Time," the lone original track on Let's Be Frank, her new cover album of Frank Sinatra standards. She recalls that she had the title in her head and offered it to her husband before she even began her Sinatra cover project, anticipating that he'd turn it into a song.

"Immediately he started singing this melody that really sounded like from another era to me," she recalls. Inspired by their relationship, the couple co-wrote the honest song in a matter of weeks. When it was done, Yearwood knew it wasn't a country song. She flirted with the idea of it becoming a Broadway number, but ultimately couldn't determine where it should land. Thankfully, Brooks knew.

"When this record happened, Garth was the one who encouraged me to play it for [producer] Don [Was]. I don't think I would've otherwise," she recalls.

Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" Almost Wasn't!

The "She's in Love With a Boy" hitmaker says she's one to keep her emotions close, but exploring her relationship with Brooks opened up a vulnerable side that led to a personal realization.

"I've always said I was never this sappy, I'm-so-in-love-with-you person, I've never been that girl, and I just thought people that were ... there was something wrong with them," she says, laughing. "And now I'm that girl. I get it now."

The moving "For the Last Time" proved a natural fit for the record. It sits just before the emotional "I'll Be Seeing You" that closes out the album and is a timeless love song that reflects the strength of the bond between the longtime couple.

"It was the first thing we've written together that really was about us," Yearwood says. "To me the sentiment is, no offense to anyone that came before, I understand now why none of that worked because this is where I'm supposed to be. That really does describe us."

Following the release of Let's Be Frank, Yearwood is working on a new country album — her first in 12 years. It is expected to debut later this year. Additionally, she and Brooks are planning to record a live duets album in front of fans.
