A bizarre incident happened on Friday that caused the death of a Waterbury man and closed down Waterbury Hospital's ER.

It turned into chaos inside Waterbury Hospital's emergency room, when a man who worked for American Electro Products went into cardiac arrest. According to Fox61, the man was rushed to Waterbury Hospital where they found a small package of sodium cyanide in his pocket and on his clothing, which was a salt in powder form. That's when things got crazy! The fire department immediately shut down the Waterbury Hospital emergency room and isolated the heating and ventilation system.

Unfortunately the 38 year old man, Norbert Claro died, with the cause of death still being investigated. Police told the Waterbury-Republican American that toxicology reports and an autopsy are in the works. Sodium cyanide is used commercially for fumigation, electroplating, and chemical manufacturing.

According to the Newstimes, police Deputy Chief, Fernando Spagnolo claims it appears the evidence leans toward that Claro exposed himself to the sodium cyanide. Whether the incident was accidental or deliberate is currently being investigated by authorities. Spagnolo also told the Newstimes that he feels strongly that there was no foul play involved. No other workers or the treatment team were affected by the sodium cyanide.
