Things you need to know on May 5.

  • Today is Cinco De Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French in 1862. Here's a history on the holiday and five local places you can go to celebrate.
  • Watch your speed. Surely something you should already be doing. Federal statistics show that 226 people died in New England in crashes that were speed related in 2012, according to Metro News Source. State Police in all six New England states have partnered in a crackdown that will put more troopers along Interstates 91 and 95 as well as other heavily traveled roads. Please don't speed - text and drive for that matter.
  • National PTA and the National Education Association (NEA) have teamed up to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8) and National Teacher Day (May 5). Often a thankless job but important beyond belief. When you consider what sports figures and celebrities are payed, the very least we can do today is make a point of thanking teachers everywhere. If you'd like to learn more go to TEACHER APPRECIATION.
  • Speaking of education - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on Monday announced it will pay for tuition, books and other expenses for ANY of its 118,000 dealership employees all around the U.S, according to CNN Money. The offer for people who work at the company's 2,400 Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, Dodge and Ram dealerships pays for all expenses at Strayer University. STRAYER UNIVERSITY offers bachelor's degrees that can be completed online. That's what I call a Win-Win!
  • Starting today Panera is publicly posting a list of ALL artificial additives it has, or plans to remove from the food they serve. Panera is calling it the "No-No List" which has over 150 ingredients they are working on taking out of the food they serve. The company has also announced that starting Wednesday May 6 their salads will only have what they are calling "clean" dressings - made with no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, or preservatives. A trend that's becoming way more popular among chain restaurants. Here's the list.
