My son, Johnny, will celebrate his birthday on October 25. We have always had Halloween-themed birthday parties for him. Now that he is an adult... I use that term loosely, because those who know my kid will totally understand, and that's okay -- I've taught him well. Mom is not about to grow up herself! Anyway, we can now move past the Snickers (mine) and Peppermint Patties (his) and kick things up a notch.

I made Candy Corn Jell-O Shots for his birthday party. Here's the recipe, which I got from A Beautiful Mess, along with actual pictures of the shots we will celebrate with this Sunday:

For 20 shots you will need:

1 small (3 oz) box orange-colored Jell-O
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/2 can (7 oz) sweetened condensed milk
2 cups water
1 cup whipped cream, vanilla or cake flavored vodka

Mix 1 cup of water and 2 packets of unflavored gelatin into a saucepan and stir over medium heat until the gelatin has melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the condensed milk and 2/3 cup of the vodka. Half of this mixture will be used for your final layer which you will add food coloring to. But for now, fill your plastic shot glasses 1/3 of the way up and refrigerate til firm (about 40 minutes).

When that layer is ready, mix a cup of water and 1 packet of unflavored gelatin and heat until it dissolves. Take it off the heat and  mix in the orange Jell-O and dissolve that too. Mix in 1/3 cup of vodka and fill your cups 2/3 of the way up on top of the white layer. Put them back in the fridge for another 40 minutes.

When that layer is firm, mix the other half of the white mixture that you saved and add in some yellow food coloring. If it has started to set you can whisk it over a very low heat or put in the microwave for a few seconds. Fill your shot glasses to the top with this yellow layer and back in the fridge they go.

Once those are set, enjoy! Trick or treat!
