This weekend, we decided to take advantage of the nice weather, and start fixing up our yard. One of the things we do each year, around this time, is fix up the gardens. We have two, a flower garden and a vegetable garden.

My husband is better with the gardening than I am. I tend to plant things, and forget about them, so plants don't really last long around me. It looks like my daughter is taking an interest in gardening, so I'm happy about that. The flower garden is hers, so she picks out the flowers, and helps to plant them.

I also picked up some vegetable plants to start our vegetable garden. There is nothing like going out to your own garden, and picking fresh tomatoes from the vine. Garden fresh tomatoes and green beans taste so good!

I found some tips from different websites that will help if you want to take up gardening. Here's the list with links:

  • HGTV suggests drawing your finger nails across a bar of soap before you start digging in the dirt. They say that the soap will keep dirt from getting under your fingernails.
  • Another good idea from HGTV is to put a ball of gardening twine in a clay pot, and pull the string through the drainage hole. This way, you will always have the twine on hand.
  • Country Living gives some advice on how to make your garden look bigger. They suggest layering plants with different heights.
  • Another tip from Country Living explains that it is better to give plants a good soaking with water instead of multiple sprinklings throughout the day. The reason is that the roots are underneath the soil, and if you do a small amount of water, it will get absorbed by the topsoil and not make it to the roots.
