A Mahopac man, who was considered a family friend, is accused of sexually abusing a young girl.

On Monday, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Daniel G. Molony, Jr. of Mahopac for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in his home.

Based upon allegations from the victim, Sheriff’s investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at Moloney’s home on Oct. 12. The next day, Moloney surrendered himself at the Sheriff’s Office, accompanied by his attorney, officials say. Police did not say what they found in Moloney’s home which led to his arrest.

Moloney is described as a family friend to the alleged victim, authorities say.

Moloney was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree criminal sexual act, all class B felonies. He was arraigned in Town of Carmel Court and released after posting $40,000 bail.

He faces 25 years in prison for each felony charge if convicted.
