A Hudson Valley man is guilty following a drunken wrong way crash on Interstate 684 that killed one person.

Thursday in Westchester County Court, Zachary Tokson pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter, all felonies, in connection with a crash that killed Elena Lopez.

Around 5:50 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2015, Tokson was driving a white Lexus SUV northound in the southbound lanes of I-684 in the Town of Bedford.

At mile marker 16.8, the SUV collided head on with a car driven by Lopez. She died instantly from multiple blunt force trauma injuries, officials say.

Tokson suffered a cut over his right eye. His passenger suffered serious injuries that required hospitalization including broken ribs, a dislocated femur, and lacerations of the liver and spleen. The unnamed female passenger survived.

A police investigation revealed that Tokson drank earlier at a bar in Brewster. After leaving the bar and stopping for food, Tokson headed onto I-684 in route to Westchester County.

Tokson stopped to take a nap at the Bedford Rest area. When he woke up, he drove the wrong way on I-684 for over a mile before the fatal crash.

A police search of his vehicle revealed an empty bottle of whiskey and a mixed alcohol drink inside a soda bottle. Tokson’s blood alcohol level was over the legal limit of intoxication, police say.

Tokson is currently out on bail. He’s due to be sentenced on Jan. 12. He faces eight to 25 years in prison.
