Those blue "I Love NY" road signs you see along side New York State highways are coming down this summer according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office reports USA TodayFor years, these signs have been an issue of contention between New York State and the federal government. The debate was over their safety and legality.

The Governor decided to take them down after the federal government docked the state $14 million in highway funds for having put them up, and ignoring warnings. The docked $14 million will be returned to New York State when the signs are taken down. New York has been given until September 30th to remove them.

When the current signs are removed new signs will replace them that meet the specifications of the federal government. The Federal Highway Administration says the current signs have too much information for a driver to comprehend and convey no information that's of use to a driver while driving.
