Jeff Gordon is getting set to begin his final full season as a NASCAR driver for the 2015 Sprint Cup Series.

What a way to start off a season with the pole position at the first major race of the season, the Daytona 500!  NASCAR adopted a new qualifying method where the days of single car qualifying are over after 56 years, and a new knockout group qualifying method is in.

This new format's been used since last year, and basically there are a few elimination rounds of cars racing as large groups, before the best driver of all sessions wins the pole position. It basically works like a playoffs competition, but prior to the actual race, of course.
