Police say a Hudson Valley man with a number of DWI arrests was intoxicated when he almost drove head-on into a police vehicle.

According to Town of Kent Police, around 1:00 a.m. Friday, Officer Darren Cea was traveling on Route 52 when a car heading southbound drove into his lane and almost struck his police vehicle head-on. The officer swerved to get out of the way, turned around and pulled over the car on Palmer Trail in the Town of Kent.

Police allege that as the officer approached the vehicle, driven by 40-year-old John Keller, from Kent, he could detect a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. The Putnam County man proceeded to fail a series of field sobriety tests and was arrested and charged with a DWI.

The DWI charge was upgraded to a felony after a computer check revealed a previous DWI conviction in 2013. Police say Keller also has 2 outstanding felony DWI charges in Patterson and Carmel.

Keller was arraigned in Kent Town Court and remanded to Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash $30,000 bond. He’s due in Kent Court on February 23rd.
