We were driving around today, running some errands, while the sun was still out. The garden needed more plants, so we headed to Lowes.

It was a beautiful day today, so it was a nice day to be out and walking around their garden center. We ended up with a bunch of new flowers and veggies to add to the garden, so it was a successful trip.

On the way home we passed by the flag in the picture above. Seeing such a large flag flown at half-staff and waving in the breeze struck me for some reason. I felt the need to snap the picture as we drove by.

Passing by that one flag put the whole day into perspective for me. Not that I don't know who Memorial Day is honoring. I know we honor our fallen soldiers today, but it is so easy to get wrapped up in the idea of a three-day weekend and lose site of what the day means.

I have written to soldiers in the past. One person I corresponded with for a while was a man named Al. I used to send him news updates, because he said it was like currency on the ship.

They really appreciate the letters, especially those that don't have anyone at home. So, if you have thought about writing a soldier, just do it. They will be appreciative and I figure it's the least we can do.

I've always held those in the military with great regard. They do something that the rest of us, obviously, cannot and I have so much respect for that. Without them, where would we be?

I felt bad, after passing that flag, because I realized I let myself get wrapped up in a three-day weekend. Then I realized that today is not the only day I think of those that have given everything for their country. I think of them often and I am beyond grateful.

Here are a few sites that allow you to write to soliders:

And to the military families who have lost brave soldiers, I am sorry for your loss. I think of you too and I am sorry for your pain. You and your loved one are not forgotten.

To those that have sacrificed so much for this country, thank you just does not seem like enough to say...but, thank you.
