A new bakery opened in Newtown about five weeks ago. My husband had stopped in a few times, but this weekend was the first time I got to try it.

Dere Street Bakery is located behind the Dere Street Restaurant, and both have opened recently. The manager of the bakery, Kyle, gave me a little background of the location and details on the items they offer.

The building where the bakery is located has housed multiple businesses, including a frame shop and a flower shop, and also served as a home for the landlord at one point. Kyle told me that the wood beams inside the building are still original to the building. I love when buildings are able to keep some of the original parts of the building, because it adds character.

Dere Street has been in business in Danbury (as a commercial commissary) for years, but this is their first retail location. So, you will be able to find fresh baked breads, as well as British and Italian backed goods. They also have sweet pies, savory pies, salads, sandwiches, European-style cakes, and a case that is devoted to artisanal British and Italian cheeses.

The breads and pastries are baked fresh at their commissary every morning and delivered to the Newtown location. Plus, they use all natural ingredients in their baked items. So, they are free of hydrogenated oils, preservatives, additives, trans-fats and high fructose corn syrup.

We brought home quite a few delicious baked items from the bakery. The kids loved the chocolate chip cookies. I took a taste too (for the good of the blog) and thought they were very good; they have a cake-like texture to them. The apple tart was delicious too. The apples they use are very flavorful, and make for a very good tart.

My husband loves scones, and he had the cheddar and red pepper scone. He said it's one of his favorite scones that he has tried. I picked the Bakewell Tart from the baked goods display. It had an almond flavor to it, and was topped with sliced almonds. All I have to say is, wow! Loved it, and I'm sure I will be stopping in for another one at some point soon.

In addition to the baked goods, we also picked up some of the fancy pastries from the pastry. One of them is the Mango Puree with Almond, and the other is a richer chocolate dessert. Not only do these look impressive, but they are absolutely delicious! Plus, they were only $4.95!

I think it's safe to say we will be visiting this bakery again. Plus, they are taking orders for Mother's Day cakes until this Friday (4/22/2016), so I might have to make some subtle hints to my husband.

One other thing I would like to mention is that they are looking for charities to pick up the food that is left at the end of the day. They want to donate the food, and would just need someone to pick it up.

It's nice to try new places, but it's even nicer when the food is really good. Dere Street Bakery is located at 2 West Street in Newtown (turn at the flagpole).
