New Moon Last Night – What That Actually Means

As we all know just by looking into the sky, there are several different phases of the moon. Full, Crescent, New, Waxing, Waning, Blue even Black (more on that coming soon because that will be quite the event). It's almost impossible to keep track of that great big glowing ball in the night sky.

Timeanddate.com has a wonderfully easy guide to refer to that explains the different phases of our nocturnal buddy stating that the way the sun, moon and earth are in line at the time of a "new moon," like we had last night, the moon is not only in complete darkness but it also rises and sets with the sun and the glare from the sun makes it impossible to see.

What's different?

The greatest difference between high and low tide is around New Moon and Full Moon. During these Moon phases, the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun combine to pull the ocean’s water in the same direction. These tides are known as spring tides or king tides.
