Things you need to know on May 15.

Thanks to MetroNews Source for the following.

  • Today is National Peace Officer's Memorial Day. Connecticut will fly their flags at half mast in honor of law enforcement officers who passed away in the line of duty. More information is available on Gov. Dannel Malloy's website.
  • On the heels of this week's deadly Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia comes this piece of info. There will be no criminal charges filed against the engineer in the 2013 deadly Metro-North Train derailment. Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson reportedly made the decision weeks ago. Officials say William Rockefeller fell asleep at the controls of the train and it derailed in the Bronx killing four people and injuring more than 70 others. The National Transportation Board determined Rockefeller's exhaustion was caused by undiagnosed sleep apnea and a drastic change in his work schedule. An attorney for the engineer says he has no recollection of the crash.
  • Prosecutors are moving to drop the perjury charges against the fiancee of Aaron Hernandez. The move comes as part of the government's decision to grant immunity to Shayanna Jenkins. She testified in Hernandez's trial, and because of that testimony prosecutors cannot further prosecute her on the charge.
  • Dairy Queen will be taking soda off its children's menu starting in September. DQ is joining a list of fast-food chains that have made similar moves in the past year due to concerns about obesity among kids. The really interesting thing about Dairy Queen's soda decision is that the chain is owned by billionaire investor Warren Buffett's conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, the largest shareholder in Coca-Cola. How's that for a "smile".
  • The Lego EMPIRE expands! Time for a "road trip"! Legoland Florida is opening its first hotel at their theme park. Geared toward families with younger children, the hotel is located just outside the park's entrance. Each floor of the five story hotel has a different theme. This part is key to a parents peace of mind, and some "alone" time - rooms are divided to give space for parents and their kids. Room start at $219, which includes early access to the park and other perks. The hotel itself is made up of more than two million Lego bricks. Ethan's wife Mindy is addicted to building Lego's! I think a vacation is in their future.
