Today is probably not the day to forget to wear your seat belt in New York.

State Police, along with local police, are committed to a higher level of enforcement of seat belt laws for the next couple weeks. Starting today, you may even pass safety belt check points en route to your destination, as the State Police Conduct their Buckle Up New York, Click it or Ticket Enforcement Campaign.

Riders in the front seats must be secured with safety belts and passengers under 16 should be secured in back seats.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 13,000 lives were saved thanks to seat belt usage in the nation in 2015, and in New York State more than 400 lives were saved. The enhanced enforcement period will start today and run through Sunday, June 4th, 2017. For more info about New York's Click it or Ticket Campaign click here.
