Quick action from an off-duty State Trooper and some good Samaritans helped save an overdosing man on Interstate 95 in Milford Sunday afternoon.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a Trooper identified by News 12 as Trooper Matthew Hancock of Troop G was off duty when he heard a radio call. Several people had called 911 to report a disabled vehicle on I-95 North by exit 36. Callers also reported that there were civilians trying to help the vehicles occupant.

When Hancock arrived at the vehicle, he found several people trying to assist a 22-year old man. Hancock recognized the signs of an overdose and administered Narcan to the man, who regained consciousness, was taken to the hospital and later released. News 12 reports that the man is OK.

All CT State Troopers have been trained to administer Narcan and have Narcan kits in their vehicles, according to the Police. They further said,

This is another example of, not only, the dangers of illegal heroin use, but the duties of Connecticut State Troopers whether they are on-duty or off-duty when in their cruiser.

Heroin use is not only illegal, but it is dangerous to the user, and potentially, to the people around them. Those that choose to use heroin then operate a vehicle put other motorists, good Samaritans and first responders at further risk.
