Every year, when the days start to get a little bit longer and the air becomes a little bit warmer, my mind always wanders towards the place that made my summer season so amazing: camp. Yes, I am one of those camp freaks, LOUD and PROUD. I would not be the same person I am today if it wasn't for my 10 years of going to summer camp. And I'm a pretty cool person right now, so thank you camp (ha ha).

I suggest to anyone that has children to send their kids to camp. I must admit, some kids are not made for camp- but there's always a way to find out and that's to send them there. Warm them up with day camp first. Day camp introduces them to socializing with other kids, as well as having an organized day of activities. If they really like those two things, then they will probably enjoy sleep away camp.

I always thought of sleep away camp as kind of an "early college". You have to live with people, clean up after yourself, learn to be respectful of other people, and basically just learn to live outside the comfort zone of your own house. It really is an amazing thing when you think about it. And to give another example of the similarity between summer camp and college, you get to pick all these classes that you take throughout the day. Sometimes these classes are a challenge, sometimes they're not.

So sit down with your kid, have a conversation about all this, and see if they would like to try it out. I still wish I could go back to summer camp. I'm still kinda bitter that I grew up and am not allowed to be a camper anymore. That's life though!
