If you travel the Taconic State Parkway you should prepare for some changes that will affect commuters starting next year.

The Journal News reports that new exit numbers will be coming to the Taconic starting next summer. Those who regularly travel the parkway know that, unlike I-84 or the Thruway, exit signs display the name of the crossroad or town the off-ramp leads to, but there is no specific number assigned to each exit. That will soon change.

New signs with exit numbers are already being installed in Westchester. They will remain covered until the project is done sometime next summer. Dutchess, Putnam and eventually Columbia counties will all get their numbered exit signs after work in Westchester is finished.

The numbers will correspond with how many miles the exit is from the beginning of the parkway in Valhalla. This means that the I-84 exit will eventually be renamed Exit 37, The Route 55 exchange will become Exit 46 and the Route 44 off-ramp will be Exit 53.

Authorities say the change is aimed at making the Taconic State Parkway safer. Instead of reading and comprehending where the exits are leading to, those who are unfamiliar with the highway can spend more time focusing on the road by just looking for a specific exit number.

We want to know what you think about the change. Do you think this will make the Taconic safer or is it just a waste of time? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.
