On August 9, 1878, the most damaging F4 tornado in CT's history, The Great Wallingford Tornado laid ruins to several sections of the town.

The Wallingford tornado, turns out, was a freak of nature. According to homefacts.com, most of Connecticut's risk level for a tornado is low to moderate, with an average of only two tornadoes per year since 1950. The highest tornado risks are in Litchfield, Hartford, and New Haven counties. Here's a short video of a tornado that ripped off the Sport Arena roof in Windsor in July of 2013.

Why am I telling you this? Because the highest risk of a tornado in Connecticut happens during the months of June, July, and August according to ustornadoes.com. If you live in Fairfield county, you'll be thrilled to hear that the risk is LOW averaging only 1 tornado per year, but Connecticut has had their share of nasty tornadoes. Here's a short list of some of the worst twisters in CT.

1. MAY 24, 1962 - An F3 twister tracked through northern New Haven and southern Hartford counties. In parts of Waterbury and Southington more than 200 buildings were demolished and another 600 damaged. The tornado traveled on its path for 11 miles and caused $4 million in damages.

2. OCTOBER 3, 1979 - One of the worst twisters in CT history, an F4 hit Windsor Locks killing three and injuring 500. It struck without warning and blasted through Bradley International Airport destroying a dozen planes while narrowly missing a 727 that was attempting to land. In its wake it caused $200 million in damages and is considered the 6th worst tornado in US history.

3. JULY 10, 1989 - It was called the Northeastern Tornado Outbreak of 1989 and resulted in 3 tornadoes in Litchfield and New Haven counties causing more that $100 million in damage.

Even though our tornado risk is low here in Connecticut, it's not a bad idea to know what to do just in case a twister starts brewing in your area. Click on weather.gov.
