The newest (and final) American Idol champ, Trent Harmon, promised his fans regular live mini-concerts after taking home the title, and in his most recent show he not only put his own twist on some pop tunes, but some classic country songs as well.

After a variety of songs from Bob Marley, John Mayer and Tom Petty, Harmon broke into a Vince Gill tune from 1994 called “Whenever You Come Around,” and followed it with “Tennessee Whiskey,” originally by George Jones and recently made popular again by Chris Stapleton.

Harmon’s finesse on the guitar shows in his Gill cover, as does his vocal skill on the emotional tune, filled with graceful riffs and a powerful chorus. His tender approach to the song is a testament to his ability to internalize and reflect the heart of a song, a skill that ultimately won him the Idol competition. He then moves into “Tennessee Whiskey,” which he chose spontaneously just by looking at suggestions from his audience. Harmon brings a funky, soulful sound to the tune that even boasts a hint of R&B flavor, in contrast to Stapleton’s raspy, raw vocals.

The young artist finishes out the set with “Rocky Mountain High,” a John Denver song covered by Allen Stone, and Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One.”

Harmon recently released his first single, “Falling,” written by Keith Urban, Dallas Davidson and Brett James, which debuted on the Billboard Hot Country charts in late April. It’s already hit No. 27 on the charts and it’s climbing steadily, not to mention hitting the Top 5 on the Top Country Digital Songs list. He’s currently working on a record with his new label, Big Machine, which he promises will be filled with that country-soul sound he displayed in the mini-concert.

“Soul music is in right now and it’s cool to sing, but it’s what comes out of me naturally,” Harmon tells TV Guide. “If I’m singing gospel music, or I’m singing country music, or I’m singing pop music, I sing it soulfully. That’s just how it comes out. So I feel like that’s going to come through on this country album.”
