This Thursday, you can join local volunteers for this annual United Way Day of Action. The Volunteers and Kicks 105.5 will be collecting books for school children in Danbury and New Milford.

Did you know that Connecticut has the country’s widest achievement gap between children from low-income households and their more affluent peers? Some studies suggest that nearly 80% of the achievement gap may be attributable to summer reading loss, also known as the “summer slide.”

You can help close the gap by providing summer reading materials to create Camp Wannaread bags for area second graders during their annual Day of Action.

Books will be collected in the Danbury area on Thursday, June 2 at the PAL Building across from the Danbury Town Park (Candlewood Lake) from 8 AM until Noon.

  • Day of Action volunteers will sort books, pack them up into bags, and create crafts and activities to stimulate literacy skills over the summer
  • Teams will deliver the books to 2nd graders at schools in Danbury and New Milford
