Ok, so I admit, at first I was not happy with the ending to Mad Men, but I know I was not the only one. After some time thinking about the episode and some insight from my mom, I've changed my mind.

Initially, I thought the Don's ending was awful. I was disappointed that such a good show would end like that, but now I get it. My mom read some comments on the AMC forum for the show. They explain it for those of us that might not have been able to interpret what the writers were going for.

Think back to when Don was talking (and breaking down) to Peggy. He was realizing what he had done in his life, crying, losing it, and what does Peggy say to him? "Don't you want to work on Coke?" That was her way of trying to lure him back to New York, she used his biggest client.

Cut to Don's last scene. It starts with him looking out at the ocean from the cliff he will soon be meditating on. Next he's in the meditation group and the camera zooms in on his face. When he cracks that little smile, you hear a ding.

I thought the ding originally meant that he was at peace, but now it seems to have meant more. Yes, Don was at peace, but the reason the Coke commercial played after his smile and the ding was because he had come up with the famous Coke commercial at that moment. Notice the setting for the Coke commercial.

Plus, remember the girl he spoke to when his niece left without telling him? She told him that people were free to come and go as they please. That girl had ribbons in her braids and in the Coke commercial there are a couple of girls with ribbons in their braids.

So it wasn't just anyone at McCann-Erickson that came up with the idea, it was Don. I like to think he also, finally, took responsibility for his kids after Betty's passing.

Now I can say I'm happy with everyone's ending. I love Peggy's ending (it was about time!) and Joan's ending (finally her own boss!).

To see what I am talking about you can watch the final scene again:
