It's been a one-two punch for residents of Texas and Florida. First, it was Hurricane Harvey, now Hurricane Irma. So, how and what sites can you go to help?

We all feel for the people in Florida after what they experienced from Hurricane Irma. Now that the storm has moved away from the Sunshine State, many are wondering what they can do to help. Here are some options:

The Center for International Disaster Information says that monetary donations are the best and here are two reasons why:

  • Survivors' needs vary
  • There are no transportation delays or customer fees

According nbcnews.com, here are some of the organizations that are offering urgent relief that you might want to consider donating to:

  • American Red Cross- The organization is opening shelters, sending supplies and putting volunteers in place around Florida. You can donate online or text "IRMA" to 90999 to chip in $10.
  • Americares- The nonprofit is accepting donations on its website.
  • Apple- Their making it easy for customers to donate to hurricane relief efforts directly through iTunes and the App Store.
  • American University in Antigua- The university has set up a Go Fund Me page to help rebuild Barbuda, which was hit hard by the storm. The university has said it will match all donations. You can donate here.
  • Unicef and Global Giving- Unicef and GlobalGiving currently are taking donations to help with hurricane relief efforts.
  • GoFundMe- They have a page dedicated to specific campaigns for people affected by the storm in the Caribbean and Florida.
  • Salvation Army- You can donate on line by visiting helpsalvationarmy.org, or Text "STORM" to 51555

Once again, we remind you when disasters like this occur, you also have to beware of scammers who like to take advantage of the situation and steal donations intended for victims. If you have any questions about a specific charity and want to see if it's legit, check out charitywatch.org or charitynavigator.org
