Speaking on Tuesday during a White House briefing, President Trump confirmed officials are working on a massive economic stimulus proposal. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said during the press conference the goal is to get Americans out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic money as soon as possible.

“Americans need cash now, and the president wants to give cash now. And I mean now, in the next two weeks. We are looking to send American's cash immediately.” Mnuchin said.

The hope is sending American's money will help improve the economy. Like for instance in Connecticut and New York, where all restaurants, bars, gyms and movie theaters are closed until further notice. Restaurants are allowed to stay open for takeout orders and bars can sell alcohol to-go.

An official cash number hasn't been confirmed, but sending checks of $1,000 to most Americans was floated by Trump and Mnuchin.

“We don’t need to send people who make a million dollars a year checks,” Mnuchin said.

Trump and Mnuchin worked on what's called a "significant economic stimulus plan" last night, which Mnuchin will present to Senate Republicans on Tuesday.

"We look forward to having bipartisan support to pass this legislation very quickly," Mnuchin said.

Issuing a payroll tax was discussed, but it would take six to eight months for American's to receive money and Trump wants to send checks to Americans immediately.

“I think we’re going to do something that gets money to them as quickly as possible,” Trump said.
