In a year full of of viruses and murder hornets, it's always nice to be able to share a nice story with a happy ending. In that vein, we'd like to recognize great work by both Brookfield Fire Departments and the Brookfield Police yesterday (June 10) as they rescued nine baby ducklings from a storm drain on Federal Road.

According to a Facebook post from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department Candlewood Company, both Candlewood and Brookfield Volunteer Fire Companies were dispatched to assist the Brookfield Police Department with a brood of baby ducklings who were trapped in a storm drain in the area of 46 Federal Road, in front of Burger King and Wendy's. The fire companies worked together with police for a duckling rescue along the busy road. One part of the drain was so deep that a ladder was required for the firefighters to get down there. The ducklings received temporary housing in a Burger King box before being happily reunited with their mother.

Candlewood’s Engine 21 responded to the scene along with other fire personnel. After arriving on scene, we received an initial report of eight ducklings that were trapped along three drainage grates. Brookfield firefighters quickly worked to remove the drainage grates and climbed down into the storm drain. After a nearly 45 minute rescue, a total of nine baby ducklings were successfully extricated from the storm drain! The ducklings were handed over to the BPD who brought them to the nearby creek to be released back to their mother.
