The U.S. News & World Report has released their 2019 Best High School list and a number of schools in Putnam County are on it.

Carmel and Pawling High Schools are among almost 40 High Schools in the Hudson Valley that have made the list of some of the best high schools not only in New York, but the entire country.

It's the most comprehensive survey ever done by U.S. News and World Report, as some 17,000 schools were surveyed, which is up by 2,700 from the last survey a year ago.

All the schools surveyed were graded in six different categories. They included college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, undeserved student performance, college curriculum and graduation rates.

According to patch.com, Anita Narayan, managing editor of education at U.S. News, said the purpose behind the ranking is to give students and parents more information about the schools in their district, and how they compare with other schools nationally.

By evaluating more schools than ever before, the new edition expands that focus so all communities can see which schools in their area are successfully serving their students — including historically undeserved populations.

Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, said in a news release:

We enhanced the methodology to provide an even more comprehensive ranking that is easier to understand and, therefore, more useful to parents and educators, now, each school's score correlates to its national percentile — a school with a score of 70 is in the 70th percentile and ranks higher than 70 percent of schools. Going forward, this methodology will allow for intuitive comparisons of a school's performance year after year.

Here are some of the schools who ranked within the Top 200 in the Hudson Valley:

  • Bronxville High School: 99 nationally / 11 in NY
  • North Salem Middle School /High School: 300 nationally / 32 in NY
  • John Jay High School: 393 nationally / 41 in NY
  • Pleasantville High School: 462 nationally / 45 in NY
  • Yorktown High School: 635 nationally / 59 in NY
  • Lakeland High School: 883 nationally / 83 in NY
  • Somers Senior High School: 1,288 nationally / 111 in NY
  • Pawling High School: 1,852 nationally / 172 in NY
  • Valhalla High School: 2,007 nationally / 181 in NY
  • Putnam Valley High School: 2,099 nationally / 189 in NY

Robert Morse, also commented about the new and improved ranking system:

We enhanced the methodology to provide an even more comprehensive ranking that is easier to understand and, therefore, more useful to parents and educators. Now, each school's score correlates to its national percentile — a school with a score of 70 is in the 70th percentile and ranks higher than 70 percent of schools. Going forward, this methodology will allow for intuitive comparisons of a school's performance year after year.
