Whether attending classes online or in-person, college will be a VERY different experience come the Fall semester. March brought a huge adjustment to the lives of many when online classes became the new norm. When will the good old time return?

Thankfully there is now some sense of certainty, as CSCU President Mark Ojakian announces in a press release that Connecticut State Colleges and its Universities will be re-opening for the Fall 2020 semester. He adds:

“We still have a lot of planning to do and more questions need to be addressed in the coming weeks and months...with significant measures in place to make our institutions as safe as possible.”

Just last month, Governor Ned Lamont spoke briefly on the subject. See his interview below:

This plan to re-open for the Fall is not so simple. Measures have been laid out in order to keep students safe upon their return.

  • Connecticut State Universities can begin bringing residential and commuter students to their campuses starting Monday, August 24th. Classes will follow the regular calendar up through Thanksgiving. Determinations regarding residential students moving in are still up in the air.
  • Connecticut's 12 community colleges can offer on-ground courses starting June 1st. This is for spring semester students who need to complete programs and for new students to enroll in workforce development programs. This summer reopening is allowed under phase 1b of Reopen CT for Higher Education. This re-opening continues into the fall semester, just like the universities, beginning August 24th.
  • Charter Oak State College will continue online classes through summer and fall.
  • The faculty and staff plan will be developed over the summer. This includes plans for reopening the CSCU system office and Charter Oak State College are being established as well.
  • Classes at the colleges will be issued in a variety of on-ground, online, remote, hybrid and flexible course models.
  • Plan B: pivot to offer fully remote courses and services if health conditions warrant.
