Local police say that after they've been working on the case for over a year, a 51-year-old man has been charged with 22 counts of sexual-related felonies.

According to the Newtown Police Department, former Newtown resident Stephen Todd Sanders was extradited back into town with assistance from the United States Marshall Service on Wednesday (October 17) from Hawaii so that he could be served with the 22-count warrant.

Police say that during the initial investigation into the sexual-related crimes that Sanders is being accused of, the NPD were informed that the local man had left the country, looking to ultimately reach the Marshall Islands, a cluster of islands set between the Philippines and Hawaii.

The Newtown Police Department says that their investigators worked along side the Southbury Police Department, Waterbury Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office in Florida on this case.

Despite not yet providing the exact details on what led to the charges against Stephen Todd Sanders, Newtown Police Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde said, “This case was one that police were not going to let go and worked diligently for over a year to bring Sanders to justice and hopefully bring some closure for the victims.”
