While studying options to end Connecticut's endless budget deficits, Governor Lamont's team is considering a tax on groceries.

According to CT Post, the tax would be for 2%, but would leave the Nutmeg State on a lonely island. None of our neighboring states have one. In fact, only 6 states in the U.S. do have taxable groceries. Because this is something that, at the moment, we don't spend a lot of time thinking about you should know you do pay a tax on certain items at the grocery store.

Here are some examples of things you PAY tax on at your local grocer:

  • Soda
  • Beer
  • Motor Oil
  • Cosmetics

What you DON'T PAY tax on:

  • Bread
  • Milk
  • Water
  • Mustard
  • Cornmeal

You get the idea, there are some head scratching distinctions on what can and can't be taxed from state to state but they all pretty much break down along the same lines. Now they want to tax it all. They want to tell you, "OK, you want a stick of butter? You give me money." Good luck greasing the pan now, Lamont wants your butter money to cover the states nut. I told you this guy was gonna be a problem. No but really, what do you think?
