The Connecticut Department of Agriculture is warning residents that if you receive an unsolicited package of seeds in the mail, avoid tearing open the package. It appears the seeds were sent from China.

CBS NEWS reports that residents in all 50 states have been sent these mystery seeds. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) agency tweeted, "Keep the packaging and do not plant seeds from an unknown origin."

These renegade foreign seeds, when planted, could wreak havoc on the environment, although that has not been proven. According to Agricultural Commissioner, Ryan Quarles, the seeds are unknown and could be harmful. Quarles went on to say,

At this point in time, we don't have enough information to know if this is a hoax, a prank, an internet scam, or an act of agricultural bio-terrorism.

If you're a Connecticut resident and receive one of these unsolicited packages of seeds from China, contact one of the state plant regulatory officials, Dr. Kirby Stafford at 203-974-8485 (Kirby.Stafford@ct.gov) or Dr. Victoria Smith at 203-974-8474 (Victoria.Smith@ct.gov). You'll be told to keep the seeds and the packaging until someone contacts you. Make sure to hold onto the mailing label.
