After more then three decades of serving the Danbury community, Danbury's acting Fire Chief Mark Omasta has called it quits.

According to a press release from the Fire Department, Mark began his 36 year firefighting career in 1984 with Citizens Hose Company 6 in Wilton. After a year, he returned to Danbury and from then on he has worked as a firefighter, an EMT and as an aircraft rescue firefighter.

He was promoted to a Lieutenant in 1999, an EMS training officer in 2007, Assistant Fire Chief in 2014 and took over as acting Fire Chief when Chief Wiedl retired in June of 2020.

In his many years of service, he contributed to the health and safety of Danbury Firefighters, and helped shape the department in many different ways.

He was named the National Fire Safety Officer of the Year in 2012 and was a big part of the new state of the art training facility. He was instrumental during the update of the burn building, the firefighters fitness program, the Engine 23 fitness area addition, the storage addition at Engine 26, and also played a part in acquiring many new pieces of apparatus and equipment for the Danbury Fire Department. More recently he's led the department though the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that he's retired, Mark is looking forward to spending time with his wife Valory, his daughter Kristn, and his granddaughter Ava. You'll also probably find him on the ski slopes, the golf course and at Danbury Airport flying the plane he owns with Chief Wiedl.
