A small group of hikers were found safe and sound after finding themselves lost within Tarrywile Park, and it was all thanks to the Danbury Fire Department and some modern technology.

According to a social media post from the Danbury Fire Department, the hikers were out in the park taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather on Monday night (February 4) when they reportedly lost their way. From there, members of the DFD used their Incident Command vehicle and cell phone/computer mapping technology to locate the missing outdoor enthusiasts.

In light of the situation, Danbury's Bravest offered up some very solid safety advice for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking. The safety tips include:

  • Always tell someone where you're going and how long you'll be gone.
  • Wear good shoes for both the terrain and weather conditions.
  • Carry essential items with you like water, snacks, a flashlight and extra clothing.
  • Now how to use location services on your cellphone and have them activated.

Aside from those tips to remember while you're preparing for your outing, the DFD also offered up some advice for what to do in the event that you get lost out there in the great outdoors:

  • Stay Calm and rest assured that rescue is not far away from anywhere in Danbury.
  • Call 9-1-1 so that dispatchers can get your location and plot your position through computer mapping.
  • Stay in one place - it's much harder to track you down if you continue moving.
  • Conserve cell battery by switching into "battery saver mode."

We're so happy that the hikers were located quickly and without incident. Yet ANOTHER job well-done by our local FD.
