Danbury FD: One Dead, One Critical After 9th Avenue House Fire

One local resident has died and one remains in critical condition following a house fire in Danbury that happened late Saturday night / early Sunday morning (May 10).

According to the Danbury Fire Department, fire fighters were dispatched to 29 9th Avenue, right across from the midtown campus of WCSU, just after midnight. While on the way to pursue the report of a smoke detector activation, the DFD received a second call, reporting the smell of smoke in the area.

While the responding unit, Engine 23, reported that no smoke or flames were visible from the front side of the two-story multi-family home, further investigation turned up a smoldering fire with smoke conditions on the in an apartment on the first floor.

One the situation was escalated to a working fire, additional fire units, members of the Danbury Police Department and local paramedics arrived to the scene.

During a search of the three apartments within the house, two victims, a male and female believed to be in their thirties, were rescued from the fire and rushed to Danbury Hospital's Emergency Department.

Tragically, the female victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, while the male victim is considered to be in critical condition as of this writing. Their identities have not yet been released to the public.

The DFD was able to quickly extinguish the fire and began an extensive overhaul. The Danbury Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene investigating the cause of the fire, which is reportedly undetermined at this time.
