Danbury Mayor on Lower COVID Numbers + City Snowstorms

There's always a lot of things happening in the City of Danbury and every week the Mayor fills us in on what's going on.

This week, Mayor Joe Cavo talks about the lower COVID-19 numbers in Danbury and the tougher stand he's taking on getting cars off the road during snowstorms.

The COVID numbers in Danbury seems to be dropping a bit with the vaccine, at least it's moving in the right direction.

"I agree, we've seen the numbers and they are starting to trend downward and it's part vaccine, but it's also that we are now past all of these super spreader events when people feel the need to get together. Throughout this whole pandemic, the story has been stay socially distant and stay out of groups, and it's hard. Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving all fall in that category and people want to be with their families, and I get that, but the result of all that gathering is when we get elevated numbers. Since we're now past those holidays, we should be in much better shape and it seems to be showing in the numbers we are seeing this week. The thing I will be interested to see and the Danbury Health Department will be looking at, is what happens after the Super Bowl. Those numbers will tell us a lot."

I just realized something the other day. When Mark was Mayor, especially last year, we had very little snow. And since you took over, we have been getting pounded with one storm after another.  So how's it going with getting those cars off the streets when it snows?

"We've been using every method we can to get the word out to people that when it snows here, we need you to get your cars off the road so that our plow trucks can get through and safely remove the snow. So far, people have been very good about moving their cars, we've been doing a lot of social media and the robo calls. As you can tell, if you drive around the city, it seems to be working. Plus, the Department of Public Works did a tremendous job with the last snowfall, I'm very happy with the way the snow was handled."

I really liked the last robo call you did for the most recent storm on Sunday. You were really laying down the gauntlet saying move your car or we're going to start towing them. 9 AM we're going to start towing!

"It's good to know I can always count on you to get me in trouble. It's important to be clear about what your goals and objectives are. Having cars on the streets makes things extremely difficult to clear the roads properly and people have been very cooperative and patient with us. We do offer the Patriot Garage and free parking during storms, so if someone doesn't have a place to put their car, the garage is an option. When I went into work Monday, I was so happy to see how clear most of the streets were, and it solves lots of problems."
