Danbury Planning For Possible Drive-Thru High School Graduations

Most likely, this year's Danbury High School graduation will not be what students and parents were hoping for.

Even though the state of Connecticut is slowly reopening, health experts are telling us that large groups of people in close proximity to one another could still spike the number of COVID-19 cases.

According to an article on ctinsider.com, Danbury High will be graduating 772 students over three days from June 10 through June 12. If each graduate's family is given two tickets for the ceremony, you now have the possibility of 1,544 family members attending the service plus the 772 graduates, which add up to 2,316 people at the O'Neill Center at WestConn.

There is no possible way a process could be put into place for proper social distancing, which is why plans are being considered for alternative ways to recognize Danbury's seniors, which is why proposals are being discussed regarding drive-thru graduation.

According to Danbury High's Principal, Dan Donovan plans are in the works for a drive-thru graduation ceremony that would include a special stage covered by a large tent complete with balloons and flowers located outside the school. Families would be assigned a designated time. When it was the student's turn, the family's car would drive up, and the student would approach the stage and handed their diploma. Parents would be waiting in a particular roped-off area while graduation photos were taken.  

Principal Donovan told ctinsider.com that graduates felt it was vital for them and their parents to see them graduate wearing their caps and gowns. Donovan also said they are awaiting word from the Superintendent's office about live streaming each day's graduation ceremony via Facebook Live.
