I can't imagine not having music in my life. It was a huge part of my school years.

We all know that recently, music programs are often cut from school budgets, so the news about a grant for Danbury schools is very welcome news.

I was psyched to see this posting on the Danbury Public Schools Facebook page announcing that Danbury schools will be receiving a grant for music learning. The award comes from a  VH1 ‘Save the Music’ grant. The post says in part:

Three Danbury elementary schools will receive $105,000 this school year to fund music programs – part of which will be presented on Oct. 23 at a presentation at Park Avenue School. More than 30 students from Park Avenue, Morris Street and South Street schools will perform with their instruments as VH1 Save the Music, partnered with SpreadMusicNow – a nonprofit organization headquartered in Redding – presents a check to fund the programs at the three kindergarten through fifth-grade schools.

I can't say enough about how important I believe arts programs are for our youth. It builds friendships, encourages creativity, and so often gives purpose to a kid who has no direction. Sadly, these programs are some of the first to be cut when money is tight.

Music education is so very important and I applaud the work of the SpreadMusicNow foundation. If you'd like to find out more about what they do, or to donate go to spreadmusicnow.org.

Every little bit helps when keeping the arts alive and strong in our public schools.
