A Danbury treasure is celebrating 50 years in business. The Music Guild on Main Street hits 50 this year with no signs of slowing down.

Owner Russ Mumma has been in his Main Street location since 1967. According to the Fairfield Citizen, Russ patterned the store after the legendary music stores in New York City. Walking in, it's easy to see the resemblance. Instruments hang everywhere and every inch of space in the store is occupied by some kind of musical gear.

Luminaries like Sopranos creator David Simon, E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt, Gregg Allman, Derek Trucks and Laura Nyro have visited the store over the years. It's got the same vibe as some of the now-defunct music stores in Greenwich Village, and as you gaze at the guitars, it's not hard to imagine yourself in NYC in the 60's, with Jimi Hendrix or Pete Townshend next to you jamming on a vintage axe.

Russ has long been a supporter of the local music scene as well.  To that end, the band Two Dollar Hat is hosting a celebration of the Music Guild's 50 years this Friday night at Vivo Bar and Grill in the Maron Hotel on Lake Avenue Extension in Danbury. Anyone who's benefited from Russ' advice, support and expertise over the years is invited to come down and jam.

As for the Music Guild, don't look for Russ or the store to close down any time soon. As he recently said on Facebook, "We'll be here for at least another 50 years."
