It's just what you don't need for your commute, delays on the Upper Harlem Line of Metro North.

Starting this Wednesday, October 17, and continuing until Sunday October 21, Metro North crews will install Positive Train Control equipment between Wassaic and Southeast.

To accommodate commuters, buses will substitute for trains traveling between Wassaic and Southeast from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Oct. 17-19, and then bus service will continue after 10:30 p.m. on October 19, and continue until October 21.

According to patch.com, the main reason for the track work is for the installation of Positive Train Control. P.T.C. is a technology designed to reduce the potential for human error that can lead to train-involved accidents, like the one that occurred in 2013 when an engineer had fallen asleep allowing the train to go way too fast around a curve and causing it to derail killing four people.

In addition to the P.T.C. safety upgrade, Metro-North crews will replace the highway grade crossing at Tenmile River Station in the town of Wassaic. At the same time, crews will also do some basic maintenance like surface track work, cutting brush and trees, welding joints and renew drainage ditches.

Metro North is reporting that regular train service should be back to normal on all southbound trains Monday, October 22 with the 5:10 a.m. train from Wassaic, and on all northbound trains on Monday, Oct. 22 with the 7:40 a.m. train from Southeast.
