With the weather warming up, my family and I have been trying to get out on the trails as much as we can. There are a lot of great parks in the area with a lot of great walking/hiking trails. So I’m continuing my Exploring Local Parks series with Huntington State Park in Redding, CT.

I love all the trails at Huntington. You can either stay on the trails by the water or you can venture further into the woods on some of the trails. In addition to the trails through the woods, there are five ponds and fields that visitors can enjoy while in the park. The park is 1017 acres, so there is plenty to enjoy.

The website for Huntington State Park gives you a good background of the park. The land has only been open to the public since 1973, because it was owned privately before that. There is a belief that one of the owners had a steam paddle wheeler that was kept in the largest pond and is now sunk in the pond. Also, as you are walking the trail by one of the ponds you can see a couple of islands and to the side of one of the islands is a small stone lighthouse. It's a pretty cool (and cute) little lighthouse.

Along the main trail you can see some private residences that are close to the trail. One of the residences has horses, so it's always fun to see if the horses are visible from the trail. There are also some older buildings on the main trail, one of them is an old horse stall. It's fun checking out the old structures, but just be careful if you do decide to get closer.

There are so many things to see and so many trails to walk at this park. When you have multiple parking lot options, you know there's a lot to see. The bigger parking lot is the one by the big field and has the sculptures of the wolves and bears at the entrance. The were made by one of the owners, Anna Hyatt Huntington, who was an internationally famous sculptress.

I always find it very relaxing to walk about Huntington and the trails are not tough to walk. You will encounter some hilly, rocky, and sometimes steep areas, but nothing that is impossible to walk over.

For more information on this park you can visit the Huntington State Park website.
