The first major snowfall of the season will affect our area starting later today through tomorrow afternoon.

They are calling it winter storm Gail, and it could produce up to a foot of snow in the Greater Danbury area.

A winter storm watch has been issued for the entire state of Connecticut as clouds take over today and snow should arrive by later on this afternoon, or by early evening. Snow is expected to continue, heavy at times overnight, before it finally tappers off sometime during the day on Thursday.

Right now, the National Weather Service is looking at both the GFS model, and the European model. Both models are projecting significant snow, anywhere from 8-10 inches in southeastern Connecticut and the shoreline, and a chance for 10-16 inches inland. The GFS model is projecting the storm ending a little sooner, giving us less snowfall, but either way there will be a lot of snow around by late Thursday, and since it's a classic nor'easter, you can expect windy conditions as well, and that will cause some blowing and drifting snow.

Of course, since meteorology is not an exact science, snowfall totals can change at anytime, but we do know we'll get a quick artic blast by Friday, and then a warming trend as we head towards Christmas Day.

  • Today: 50% chance of snow after 1pm, high near 30.
  • Tonight: Snow could be heavy at times, with winds gusts between 14 and 21 mph. 100% chance of snow, anywhere from 10-14 inches possible.
  • Thursday: Snow gradually tappers off after noon, with a few snow showers in the early afternoon. Highs during the day near 30. Chance of snow is 60%.
  • Friday: Sunny with temps in the low 30's.
